The past 24-25 March , 2010 was held at IE University’s Segovia campus the Symposium “Transnational Connection: Chanllenges and Opportunities for Political Communication” involving over one hundred professionals and academics.


IE School of Communication organized the symposium in collaboration with leading international organizations: Center for Global Communication Studies of Annenberg School for Communication, International Communication Association (ICA), World Association of Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), International Political Science Association (IPSA), International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) and the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA).

On April 19th there will be the first activity organized by IE Business School and Ramón Areces Foundation within the collaboration agreement recently signed between the two institutions.

I Madrid Marketing Workshop is a joint initiative of marketing faculty of three Madrid-based academic institutions: Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Instituto de Empresa and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Islandia_2_ 369Professor Pablo Tejedo has participated in the International Meeting of Antarctic Researchers, an initiative which is part of the International Polar Year framework.

Since 2002 Pablo has researched the impact of researchers’ trips along the fragile Antarctic surfaces. The results of his research have recently been published in the prestigious journal Antarctic Science (Cambridge University).

The Department of Archeology at IE University, supervised by Cesáreo Pérez, attended the 11th International Symposium on Roman and Provincial Art, which was centered around the following theme: Roma y las Provincias: modelo y difusión (Rome and Provinces: Model and Diffusion). The symposium presented the results of the research work entitled Cauca: Arquitectura Monumental Tardoantigua, which was developed in the Pizarras site in Coca, Segovia.


In addition, the Department of Archeology has also attended the 9th ASMOSIA International Conference. The organization intends to build an updated reference for this field of research entitled Interdisciplinary Studies on Ancient Stone, and thus contribute to the diffusion of scientific knowledge on architectural and cultural heritage in stone (buildings, sculptures, sarcophagi, etc.) in the territories of Ancient Europe and the Near East.

In its ninth edition, this organization has chosen the candidate and former capital of the province Tarraconensis of Hispania, thus putting together the first conference of these characteristics to take place in Spain.

In cooperation with the ICAC (Catalonian Institute of Classical Antiquity) team, the members of the Department of Archeology revealed the results of the analysis of the material on the Pizarras site, entitled: Marmoreal Representation of Las Pizarras (Cauca, Segovia): a Roman Site”.


The paper entitled “Laboratory of Reflexive Architecture (LAR)”, delivered by Professors Miguel Jaime and Eugenia López Reus has been accepted for presentation and publication at the 1st Conference on University Teaching, which will take place in Vigo on July 2-4, and will be sponsored by the universities of Vigo, Santiago de Compostela and La Coruña.

Cristina Cruz’s article “Saving Face: Why Family Firms Pollute Less?”, authored with Pascual Berrone, Luis Gómez Mejía and Martín Larraza, received the Best Paper Award at the EURAM (European Management Meeting 2009).

Gregory Truman received the Claudio Ciborra Award at the ECIS (European Conference on Information Systems).

Professors María de la O del Santo and José Vela participated in the International Conference City Futures in a Globalising World: An International Conference on Globalism and Urban Change, in Madrid on June 4, 5 and 6, with the following paper: “Crossing the River : Native Space, Stranger Space, Urban Space”

Professor Concepción Díez-Pastor attended the 3rd Architectural and Urban Development Research Conference, which was held at the Technical Superior School of Architecture, with the paper “Arquitectura e investigación: Estado de la cuestión”.

On May 26 Associate Professor Carmen Abril (Marketing Department) presented her paper titled “The Impact of Store Brands and Manufacturer Brands in Consumer Acceptance of New Products” at the EMAC (European Marketing Association Conference) in Nantes, France.

The paper “Board Composition and Firm Internationalization”, authored by Monika Hamori, Margarita Mayo and PhD student José Luis Rivas which was accepted for the 2009 Academy of Management Meeting (Chicago), has been judged by its reviewers as one of the best accepted papers in the program, and has been accepted for publication in the Best Paper Proceedings of the 2009 Academy of Management Meeting.

The European Accounting Review Research Conference on “Measurement Issues in Financial Reporting”, took place at IE Segovia Campus on March 20-21, 2009.

Several IE professors (Salvador Carmona, Nieves Carrera, Robert Watson, Garen Markarian) participated in the conference, which was sponsored by the IE Business School and IE University, and co-presided by Marco Trombetta. The best papers presented at the conference will be published in a special issue of European Accounting Review co-edited by Marco Trombetta.

The work “The Role of Hunting Activity in the Conservation at the Top-level of theTecosystem: Game Species and Vultures”, authored by Pedro Pérez Olea (School of Biology), along with Patricia Mateo-Tomás (León University), has been accepted to be delivered orally at the 2nd European Congress of Conservation Biology (Prague, September 1-5 2009).

The work “Impacto de la intensificación agraria sobre la biodiversidad. Implicaciones para una gestión agrícola sostenible”, has been published in technical documentation form. This piece of work was presented by Pablo Tejedo, María José Sanz, David Gómez and Pedro P. Olea, along with researchers from Léon University at the National Conference for the Environment, Sustainable Development Summit, December 1-5, 2008, Madrid.  

Javier Carrillo, Professor of Economic Environment, was invited at the end of March to give a presentation at the 2nd Research Seminar on Innovation Systems, Complex Systems and Sustainable Development. This is the second in a series of research seminars on complexity economics and sustainable development supported by the UK Environment Agency and the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The first research seminar was held at Oxford University in November 2008 and this year’s seminar was hosted at the Free University of Bozen (Italy), where Carrillo presented the paper “System Transition: Concepts and Framework for Analysing Energy System Research and Governance”. This paper was the first to result from the project “Governance and Research of Nordic Energy System Transition (GoReNEST)”, funded by Nordic Energy Research, a joint initiative of Nordic governments.

Gregory Truman presented his research on IT knowledge and skills at the International Conference on Information Systems, which was held in Paris.   His research explores individual, group and organizational level influences over IT knowledge and skills sharing among coworkers. 

The article “Board Composition and Firm Internationalization” authored by José Luis Rivas (PhD student) and Professors Monika Hamori and Margarita Mayo (Human Resources and Organizational Behavior Department), has been nominated for the award for best article in the International Management Division of the Academy of Management 2009.

The article “The Right to be Defended in China” authored by Marie Jose  Garot, has been accepted for presentation to be delivered at the European China Law Studies Association Conference in Viena.

The article “Toward a Contingency Theory of Telecommuting Adoption: The Role of Leadership”, authored by Margarita Mayo along with PhD students Shainaz Firfiray  and Veronica Villena has been accepted for presentation at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting.

The article “Team Members’ Innovativeness Fit with Leader and Team: Effects on Members’ Socio-Emotional and Performance Outcomes”, authored by professors Margarita Mayo, Juan Carlos Pastor and Andreas Richter has been accepted to be presented at the Academy of Management Meeting.

The article “The Role of the Supply Chain Executive in Supply Chain Integration: A Behavioral Approach”, authored by Elena Revilla, Luis Gómez-Mejía (W.P. Carey School of Business) and PhD student Veronica Villena, has been accepted for presentation at the Academy of Management Meeting.

Professor Concha Díez-Pastor has been invited by Dr. Mariann Simon, Head of the Theory of Architecture Department, to deliver the following two lectures: ‘The Origins of Contemporary Spanish Architecture’ and ‘The ‘Bilbao effect’: Contemporary Architecture in Spain’, at the School of Architecture, Budapest University of Technology and Economics.  

Professor Concepción Díaz Pastor participated in the Licht-Konzepte in der vormo dernen Architecktur Congress, organized in Berlin by the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI-Zentrale), from February 26th to March 1st, where she delivered the paper “Light as a Symbolic Definer of Spaces in Romanesque Architecture”, in representation of the research group she is part of, along with professors Margarita Arroba, Patricio Alañón, Julián García y Joaquín Grau.

A paper co-authored by Monika Hamori and IE PhD student Burak Koyuncu “Does Jobs-Specific Experience Increase Performance on the Job? A Look at 1001 European and US CEOs” has been nominated for the Best paper award at the European Academy of Management Conference (EURAM 2009). It will also be published in the Best Paper Proceedings of the conference.

Professor José Vela will participate in the Third Sessions on Research in Architecture and Urban Development with the following paper: “The Other: (of) Architecture. Research in Architecture or How Architecture is Already Research”.

Professors José Vela and María de la O del Santo will participate in the international conference City Futures in a Globalising World: An International Conference on Globalism and Urban Change” with the following paper: “Crossing The River : Native Space / Stranger Space / Urban Space”.

The 24th Spanish Society of Microscopy Conference will be held June 16-19, 2009, in Segovia.

This conference will be organized by SME, SPMicros, IE University and the National Centre of Biotechnology.

The 5th Meeting of “Communication Scientists and Professionals” was celebrated on January 16th last. Professor Almudena González delivered the conference “From Barrier-Free Television to a Board of Directors for Audiovisual Services: The Development of Public Policies on Television Advertising in Spain”.

Professor Fernando Villaseñor has recently participated in a seminar organized by the CNRS, in Paris, with the following presentation “Bibliophilia and the University: The Illuminated Codex of Diego de Anaya (1357-1437)”.

On November 27, Professor Fernando Villaseñor  delivered his conference titled Soldiers of Christ. Military Orders and their Intervention in the Iberian Peninsula, in the C.C. Julian Besteiro de Leganes.

On Nov. 10 and 11, 2009 Professor Fabrizio Salvador joined the MIT Smart Customization Group (under the MIT Media Lab), an MIT industry-academia initiative that brings together leading scholars who share an interest in customization/product variety management across different management disciplines (operations, marketing, innovation and strategy/organization theory). The 25th EGOS Colloquium on ‘The Social Dynamics of Standardization’ will be celebrated July 2-4, 2009, in Barcelona. The Eighteenth World Business Congress of the International Management Development Association (IMDA) devoted to Management Challenges in an Environment of Increasing Regional and Global Concerns will be held in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia from July 1st through 5th, 2009 in cooperation with International Black Sea University and in partnership with Georgian Ministry of Economic Development. The 2009 IAMCR Conference will be held on July 21st through 24th, 2009, in Mexico City at the Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco-UNAM. The Political Economy Section welcomes proposals for papers focused on the general conference theme, “Human Rights and Communication,” and papers that address theory and research related to the study of the political economy of media and communications. Also, proposals that include issues relating to community communication and political economy will be considered for a joint session between the Political Economy and Community Communication sections.

Submission deadline dates are December 5th 2008 for abstracts (between 100 and 200 words long), and January 12th 2009 for accepted papers. An amended Call for Papers is available on the web. The new EMMA Best Paper prize will be awarded to the paper that makes the most significant contribution in Media Management. In addition, the best papers from the Conference will be published in the International Journal of media management.

The 9th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Business will be celebrated in Honolulu, Hawaii, on June 12-15, 2009. Professor Concepción Diez-Pastor Iribas, from the School of Architecture, has been named “peer reviewer” for Episteme magazine, published Newcastle University (Great Britain).

Concepción has also participated in the “International Conference for Image and Appearance”, with the following presentation: The Modern Notion of Household. She also presented, along with Margarita Arroba, From Ritual Illumination to Background Illumination.


Professor Javier Ignacio García, from the School of Communication, has recently participated in the “Third International Conference on Security and Defense” with the following presentation The Battle Groups of the European Union: An Appropriate Instrument for Dealing with the Crisis?.

On November 28th, the IE Business School hosted the Third Meeting of Communications Professionals and Scientists. Professor Ibrahim Al Marashi delivered the following presentation Iran’s Media Arena: Communicating Reform, Regime Change, and Freedom of Speech in the Islamic Republic.

On December 1st, Félix Cuesta, Associate Professor in the Marketing Department, participated in the Annual Nobel Economics Prize Meeting, with the following presentation: Business Transformation to Overcome the Crisis.

On November 19th, professor Ana Martín , from the School of Communications, participated in the 1st International Conference on Image and Appearance” with the following presentation: The Representation of Emotions in Today’s Portrait”.

Ana Martín also presented: The Fashion Photography Genre at the Museo del Traje in Madrid, as part of the course “Photography and Fashion” which will be held from November 18th to December 5th.

IE University (School of Biology), together with the National Center of Biotechnology, will organize the International Congress of electronic and confocal Microscopy that will be held June 16-20, 2009, in IE University.


The congress is aimed at strengthening microscopic techniques in southern Europe, and is open to the international community. 

Weblog created in April 2006 has become a forum of debate featuring numerous articles from its seven publishers, as well as contributions of invited publishers. In collaboration with the IE’s Jean Monnet Module and the Spanish Foreign Ministry’s program “We spoke of Europe”, it is now holding a series of seminaries related to European Integration.


Fernando Villaseñor participated in the CSIC Conferece “XIV International Days of History of the Art” with the paper: Art versus ideology: Granada’s image of War in the art of the XVth century.

Laura Illia, assistat professor of Corporate Communications at the IE school of Communication participated in the workshop “Mapping Societal Conversation of Science: Methodological Issues and Avenues”, in Sofia (Bulgaria). She pesented the advantages and disadantages of using co-occurrence analysis of text to better identify the main themes that media cover in their articles.

IE University has signed an agreement with the Foundation CONAMA to organize the 9th National Congress of the Environment summit on Sustainable development, from December 1-5 2008 in the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid. Since participants will discuss interdisciplinary topics such as rural development, climate change, energy, infrastructures, mobility and other issues, it is of interest to many areas, and IE professors can attend anay portion of the congress free of charge and can even invite students.
