Marco TrombettaDear fellow researchers,

We have just finished out yearly process of evaluation of the research activity conducted by our permanent faculty. Once more we have many reasons to be happy.

Almost any indicator shows improvements over last year performance. The number of publications both in the FT list of academic journals and in the list of journal of high interest for IE (Top IE), for example, has increased.

However in this editorial I want to stress two indicators that sometimes are overlooked.

First I want to highlight the fact that members of our faculty have acted as referee for 169 articles under consideration for publication in international academic journals. From 2006 this number has increased by 134%. This evolution testifies the consolidation of our school as a key international player in the peer-to-peer evaluation of research outputs. Moreover, IE professors are increasingly more often called to be members of international panels of experts involved in research evaluation. We have to be very proud of this achievement and I want to take this opportunity to thank all the colleagues involved in these activities for accepting these roles as referees and evaluators. This demanding activity is often non-remunerated but it is of crucial importance for the research status of our school and for the international research community as a whole.

Secondly, I would like to draw your attention to the 37 new case-studies produced by our permanent faculty. Research and teaching have to feed each other constructively and should not be seen separate aspects of our profession. The authorship of a good case-study should be an example of this positive interaction. And the quality of our case-studies is supported by the awards and positive reviews that they receive internationally. So again I want to thank all the colleagues involved in this fundamental activity.

We are in the process of producing the new Research Report covering years 2010 to 2012, which should be ready before the summer. There you will find more information about our results.

 Best wishes,

 Marco Trombetta
